Father-composer Mykhailo Verbytsky was honored in Lviv

Today, on March 4, Lviv commemorated the 209th anniversary of the birth of Mykhailo Verbytskyi, a Ukrainian composer, priest, public figure and author of the music to the national anthem of Ukraine.

Representatives of the authorities and the public laid flowers at the monument to the composer at the intersection of General Chuprynky and Stepan Bandera streets. A joint prayer was also held.

Iryna Kulynych, Deputy Mayor of Lviv for Humanitarian Affairs, joined the event on behalf of the city community.

Mykhailo Verbytskyi is a Ukrainian composer, choral conductor, father of the UGCC, author of the music of the national anthem “Ukraine has not yet died.” The first performance of the work “Ukraine Has Not Yet Died” as the national anthem took place on March 10, 1865, in Przemysl as the final number of a concert dedicated to Taras Shevchenko.

On December 27, 2015, on the 200th anniversary of the birth of Mykhailo Verbytskyi, a monument in his honor was unveiled and consecrated in Lviv. The monument was erected at the intersection of Bandera and Chuprynky streets on the initiative of the Nadsyannya Society. The authors of the monument are Volodymyr and Andriy Sukhorski.
