Father Mykhailo Verbytsky was commemorated in Mlyny

Yesterday, on the birthday of the outstanding composer, the author of the music of the National Anthem of Ukraine, Mykhailo Verbytskyi, a delegation from the Yavoriv community paid tribute to the glorious son of the Ukrainian people in the Polish city of Mlyny, where the grave of Verbytskyi’s father is located.

Together with friendly Polish colleagues, the community sang songs that perpetuate the good memory of Mykhailo Verbytskyi and prayed together for peace in Ukraine.

Reference: Mykhailo Verbytskyi was born on March 4, 1815 in the village of Yavirnyk Rusky, near Przemyśl. At the age of 10, her father died, and her mother remarried and renounced her parental rights. He and his brother were taken care of by a relative – Ivan Snigurskyi, bishop of the UGCC of Przemyśl. He founded a choir in Przemyśl, later a music school, where Mykhailo sang and studied. Seeing the boy’s talent, the bishop invited qualified teachers who gave him a thorough musical education. In 1850, he graduated from the Lviv Seminary and was ordained a priest. In 1856, he settled in Mlyny, where he lived the rest of his life. There, in 1863, he wrote the music for Pavel Chubynskyi’s poem “Ukraine is not dead yet.” The first performance of the work took place on March 10, 1865 in Przemyśl at a concert dedicated to Taras Shevchenko. The composer died of tongue cancer in Mlyny in 1870.
