Unity Day in Drohobych: The City Honored Historical Unity
Unity Day, celebrated annually on January 22, symbolizes the desire for unity among Ukrainians. This year, Drohobych became the center of celebrations where the community gathered to recreate the symbolic ‘chain of unity’ in the Rynok Square, with words of patriotism and solidarity resonating.
Historical Roots and Modernity
In the distant 1919, the unification of the Ukrainian People’s Republic (UNR) and the Western Ukrainian People’s Republic (WUPR) was announced in Sofia Square, Kyiv. More than a century later, Drohobych revives these historical events in the form of a living chain of unity, symbolizing the inviolability and invincibility of the Ukrainian spirit.
The celebrations began with the performance of the anthem and a minute of silence to honor the heroes who gave their lives for Ukraine. The event was attended by representatives of the authorities, civic activists, and youth, all expressing their dedication to the idea of unity. Mayor Taras Kuchma called for cohesion in the struggle for the future of the state.
Emphasis on Cultural Heritage
The central element of the celebration was the ‘living chain,’ where participants symbolically united, demonstrating unity and solidarity. The event was accompanied by patriotic songs from Vasylyna Kovalchuk and Yuri Zhuk, adding a special atmosphere to the overall event.
The event concluded with a collective performance of the spiritual Anthem of Ukraine, which once again highlighted the indomitable strength of the Ukrainian people. The organization of the event was managed by the Department of Culture and Tourism Development of the City Council, ensuring a proper level of execution.
