Lviv without barriers: grey mosaic to be dismantled from Serbska Street and laid on the square Market Square.

This week, work will resume on Pl. Rynok Square will resume work on the arrangement of “accessibility paths”. The works will be carried out on the right side of the main entrance to the Town Hall. “Since we may not have enough grey mosaic, to pave the path to Rynok Square, we will use Serbska Street and Serbsky Street. Rynok Square, we plan to dismantle about 40 m2 of grey mosaic from Serbska Street, and pave Serbska Street with red paving stones that we have in our warehouses,” explained the Galician District Administration.

In general, accessibility work on Rynok Square in the city began in October last year at the intersection with Serbska Street. A smooth transition to Rynok Square has already been made there. We remind you that the “accessibility paths” on Rynok Square are being arranged with the help of the Ukrainian government. Market Square is being financed with earmarked funds from Ukrainian and international partners. That is, they are earmarked exclusively for the inclusivity programme, and no funds from local or state budgets are spent on this.

The reformatting of Rynok Square for the needs of people with reduced mobility is only part of a large set of accessibility works being carried out in the city. It is about ensuring the inclusiveness of various institutions: commercial, municipal and state. It is important that inclusivity should be not only outside but also inside the establishments, including so that people in wheelchairs can use, for example, an accessible bathroom in a restaurant.

According to the Social Protection Department of the Lviv City Council, 5.6% of the residents of the Lviv community, or 47,500, are officially disabled. In addition, the city treats many military personnel who need a barrier-free environment and who are not included in these official statistics. Due to the war started by Russia, the number of people for whom it is important to have an accessible environment is increasing every day.
