Lviv introduces modern roundabouts at two major junctions

In Lviv, traffic at major city junctions is being reorganised according to the principles of a modern roundabout, in order to improve safety and streamline traffic flows. This was reported by the Department of Urban Mobility and Street Infrastructure of the Lviv City Council.

At the junction of Kulparkivska and Naukova streets, a new modern roundabout traffic scheme is already in operation. According to the city authorities, under the previous traffic arrangement, 18 road accidents with casualties were recorded here since 2017.

The Urban Mobility Department stresses that the purpose of introducing this format is to make traffic more predictable and safer for drivers, public transport passengers, pedestrians and cyclists, rather than simply to “narrow the road”. Thanks to the revised layout, drivers choose their direction in advance, the number of conflicting manoeuvres is reduced, and the roundabout becomes clearer for all road users.

Unlike traditional large roundabouts, a modern roundabout has fewer conflict points and is designed in such a way that drivers are forced to reduce speed even as they approach the junction. As the department’s specialists explain, this removes intersecting trajectories directly within the junction, which significantly reduces the number of accidents and makes traffic more stable and predictable.

By the end of the week, a similar traffic arrangement is planned to be introduced at another major transport hub — the junction of Kulparkivska, Vyhovskoho and Volodymyra Velykoho streets. There, work is being completed on installing traffic islands, renewing road markings and putting up new road signs, which should clearly separate traffic flows and reduce delays.

Once both junctions are operational, the city will monitor how these hubs function and, if necessary, adjust the traffic organisation.

The City Council recalls that work to modernise the junctions began at the end of April 2026. The decision to introduce modern roundabouts was taken by the City Road Safety Commission back in late December 2021, but due to the start of the full-scale war it was not possible to implement it at that time.

A roundabout is a modern type of circular junction where traffic is organised according to a “spiral” principle. Vehicle trajectories do not intersect within the interchange: each lane directs traffic to a specific exit, which in practice makes dangerous lane changes directly on the roundabout almost impossible and reduces the accident rate, while at the same time providing higher capacity compared with traditional circular junctions.
