4 million euros to be allocated to improve treatment for children with cancer in Lviv region

In Lviv region, there are plans for a large-scale upgrade of the infrastructure for treating children with oncological diseases. 4 million euros have been earmarked for these needs with the support of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

The Clinical Centre for Paediatric Medicine will establish a modern neuro-oncology treatment unit, new laboratories and a neurosurgical operating block. This involves not only refurbishing premises and purchasing equipment, but also developing the professional competencies of medical staff.

Ukrainian doctors will undergo training at the Princess Máxima Centre for Paediatric Oncology in Utrecht, one of the largest specialised paediatric oncology institutions in Europe. The parties plan to deepen their cooperation so that Dutch and Ukrainian specialists can work together, perform joint operations and share practical experience.

Every year, more than 19,000 children receive inpatient treatment at the Clinical Centre for Paediatric Medicine, and a further 110,000 young patients receive consultations. The institution provides care for children with cancer, performs bone marrow transplants and complex neurosurgical procedures. The investment will make it possible to expand treatment options in Ukraine in line with modern global standards, so that children can remain close to their families.

Lviv region is also providing financial support for the Centre’s development. Last year, more than 170 million hryvnias were allocated from the regional budget for its needs. A separate 840,000 hryvnias was allocated for designing the neuro-oncology treatment unit, which will now be developed jointly with international partners.

As part of preparations for the implementation of the project, a meeting on the Centre’s development was held with members of the Dutch parliament, Michiel van Nispen and Laurens Dassen. The Ukrainian side is expecting further positive decisions on supporting the initiative. Particular mention was made of the contribution of the Centre’s director, Bohdan Malovanyy, and the medical team in saving children’s lives.
