Program for Assisting Children with SMA Extended in Lviv Region

The program for assisting children with spinal muscular atrophy has been extended in the Lviv region.

The Lviv Regional Council’s communal non-commercial enterprise ‘Clinical Center for Children’s Medicine. Western Ukrainian Specialized Center’ and the pharmaceutical company Roche Ukraine have signed a Memorandum to extend the program for assisting children with SMA. Within the program, patients with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) receive modern treatment with medications that save lives and help restore motor functions. Thanks to Roche Ukraine’s charitable initiative, the medications remain accessible, and the therapy continuous.

‘Signing the Memorandum guarantees continuous treatment for our patients and allows new children to start therapy immediately after diagnosis,’ stated Roman Kizyma, the head of the Clinical Center for Children’s Medicine. One vial of the medication costs over 240,000 UAH, and on average, three vials are required per month for the treatment of one child.

‘This is extremely important for our patients, as discontinuing treatment can lead to disease progression and loss of achieved results,’ emphasized Olena Kozlova, the director of the Western Ukrainian Specialized Center. The Center operates special support programs for orphan patients funded by state and regional budgets. Meanwhile, Roche Ukraine has been helping to provide continuous therapy for children with SMA for several years, supplying innovative medications.

Additionally, the company supports doctors by facilitating their participation in specialized conferences and forums to ensure specialists have access to the latest knowledge and modern methods of SMA treatment.
