This technique was developed by the well-known pediatric surgeon, professor of the Wroclaw Medical University, president of the Association of Pediatric Surgeons of Poland, Dariusz Patkowski. It absolutely corresponds to a full-fledged operation, which is performed by an open method, but at the same time the integrity of soft tissues is not violated.
“Its essence is that a thin needle is inserted in the area near the hernia, and a 3-millimeter camera for visualization of the operation is inserted into the umbilical fold. After removing the needle and camera, a puncture remains on the body as after a regular injection. That is, there is no injury at all,” explains the surgeon.
Surgeons from the “Surgery +” Clinic with the Center for Minimally Invasive Surgery and Reconstructive Operations of the Gastrointestinal Tract in Children possess this technique.
Congenital inguinal hernia in children is one of the most frequent pathologies in surgery. In some, it manifests itself immediately after birth, in others at the age of 5, in some even after 10. It all depends on the size of the defect of the inguinal canal, that is, the place of the hernia. However, in any case, it is excitement for parents and anxiety for children.
“We operate on many young patients for inguinal hernia. We offer parents a method of surgical intervention through the “needle”, that is, without any incision under the control of a video camera, which significantly reduces trauma during the operation,” says Mykola Mykyta, a surgeon at the hospital.
