In Lviv’s parks, special watering bags are being installed on young trees to help keep them supplied with moisture during prolonged droughts. This was reported by the Department of Ecology and Natural Resources of Lviv City Council.
As ecologists explain, this system allows water to reach the tree’s roots slowly, penetrate deeper into the soil and not spread across the lawn. This helps young plantings to take root better and cope more easily with hot periods.
Deputy Head of the Department of Ecology and Natural Resources of Lviv City Council Oksana Lutsko noted that the water from the bags drains slowly, which allows it to penetrate deeply into the root system. According to her, such solutions are particularly relevant due to climate change and frequent prolonged droughts in Lviv, and also depend on the tree’s location and the amount of sun it receives.
The City Council emphasises that the use of watering bags will help young trees cope more easily with the heat and promote better growth.
Deputy Mayor for Urban Planning Liubomyr Zubach reported that 36 such bags have already been installed in the Na Valakh Park, Zamarsynivskyi Park, the 700th Anniversary of Lviv Park and in the square on Kryvonosa Street. Some of these trees were planted as part of the “Give the City a Tree” campaign, which is ongoing, and in the autumn new saplings are planned to be planted in Lviv. In the spring, they decided against mass planting due to excessively dry weather.
Liubomyr Zubach also reminded that, in addition to trees, benches can also be donated to the city as part of the “A Bench for Your Home City” campaign. The campaign is open-ended: you only need to choose one of the proposed locations, and the Department of Ecology will take care of all organisational matters.
