Lviv Doctors Successfully Conduct a Voice Restoration Surgery in a 1-Year-Old Child
🏥 This condition occurs in approximately 4-5 children per 100,000! The otolaryngologists at our Center restored the voice and breathing of 1-year-old Sofiya, who was suffering from a complex disease – laryngeal papillomatosis!
❗️Although the doctors of our hospital have extensive experience treating children with laryngeal papillomatosis, Sofiya is still the youngest patient to undergo surgery here!
A family from Budapest, originally from Zakarpattia, turned to our Center for Children’s Medicine. Their daughter Sofiya, around 6-7 months, developed hoarseness, whispering, and difficulty breathing, which worsened during sleep, eating, and activity. Within a few months, respiratory insufficiency developed.
In Hungary, local doctors could not assist the child, arguing that Sofiya was too young for an endoscopic examination and potential surgery.
The road to recovery led the family to our hospital in Lviv. The family was referred to our specialists by doctors from Uzhgorod. Our otolaryngologists conducted a detailed diagnosis and discovered the girl had a rare disease – laryngeal papillomatosis. This condition requires complex surgical intervention. Only surgery can help the child.
What is Laryngeal Papillomatosis?
Laryngeal papillomatosis is a disease where numerous small benign tumors, or papillomas, appear in the larynx (vocal cords, trachea). They cause hoarseness, difficulty breathing, wheezing, and in severe cases, can even block the airways and pose a life threat.
Why is Papillomatosis Dangerous?
Without treatment, papillomas can quickly grow and significantly hamper a child’s breathing. Therefore, it is important to consult a doctor at the first symptoms. This disease is found in approximately 4-5 children per 100,000. It is considered rare but can have serious consequences for the child if timely treatment is not initiated.
✅ The surgery was successful! Sofiya can breathe freely again, her voice is restored, and our team of doctors continues to monitor the child’s condition and maintain contact with the family.
“The papillomas were blocking more than 90% of the larynx’s lumen. Without urgent surgery, dangerous events could have developed rapidly and at any moment,” explained Fedir Yurochko, head of the Pediatric Otolaryngology Clinic.
🔎 The team of doctors working on the case included an otolaryngologist, Clinic Head Fedir Yurochko, and anesthesiologist Volodymyr Mishchuk, who ensured high-quality general anesthesia.
Thank you to our ENT specialists for saving Sofiya’s voice and providing her a safe childhood!
👩⚕️ If your child has developed hoarseness or breathing problems, do not delay visiting a specialist! Timely diagnosis is the key to a healthy future.
