On Thursday, December 19, Lviv will hold a farewell ceremony for three soldiers who heroically gave their lives defending Ukraine from Russian aggression. Roman Tymkiv, Taras Diachok, and Danylo-Oleh Chekan died protecting their homeland. City authorities urge residents and visitors to join the ceremony and refrain from festive activities during this solemn day.
The farewell will begin at 11:00 a.m. at the Garrison Church of Saints Peter and Paul. A public ceremony will follow at 11:30 a.m. on Rynok Square, and the soldiers will be laid to rest at Lychakiv Cemetery.
Biographies of the Heroes
Roman Tymkiv (October 17, 1976 – February 23, 2024)
Born in the Altai region to a military family, Roman grew up and studied across different countries. He graduated from the Lviv Physics and Mathematics Lyceum and later from the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics at Lviv University. He also pursued education in the U.S. and Canada.
At the start of the war, he joined the Armed Forces of Ukraine and served in Donetsk and Zaporizhzhia regions. Roman is survived by his father and brother.
Taras Diachok (January 28, 1973 – November 13, 2024)
A native of Lviv, Taras was passionate about cars, fishing, and foraging. Before the war, he worked in transportation. He joined the Ukrainian military and served in the 24th Mechanized Brigade in Donetsk. He is survived by his large family, including his mother, wife, daughters, grandchildren, brother, sister, and nephews.
Danylo-Oleh Chekan (August 7, 1991 – December 16, 2024)
Danylo-Oleh, educated in Lviv, specialized in innovation management. Known for his kindness and dedication, he served in the “Da Vinci Wolves” battalion and fought in Kherson and Donetsk. He leaves behind his wife, daughter, parents, and sister.
