So after graduating from school, at the first opportunity, he turned to the military registration and enlistment office and said he wanted to serve in the army.

The sad news was reported at the National Academy of Land Forces named after Hetman Petro Sagaidachny.

The young man was offered a contract job as a senior mechanic of a radio relay station in a military unit near the capital. But three months later, Alexander decided to become a professional soldier and entered the Lviv species university. The profession of gunner was chosen not by chance. After Kononenko’s release, he was sent to the 17th separate Kryvyi Rih tank brigade named after Konstantin Pestushko, and then, together with his unit, to the area of the Anti-Terrorist Operation in Donbas. The young lieutenant fought bravely, and thanks to his strong knowledge and skills he almost immediately gained authority among his subordinates and officers. The talented lieutenant was soon appointed commander of the self-propelled artillery battery.

After a full-scale invasion of the Russian occupiers, Kononenko fought in the hottest spots. On April 13, he was severely wounded during enemy shelling of a command and control post near Novotoshkivka in the Luhansk region. For a week, military doctors fought for his life!
