Lviv will say goodbye to three defenders of Ukraine today

On Tuesday, 5 November, Lviv will say goodbye to servicemen Artur Katash, Andriy Fys and Dmytro Ushakov, who defended Ukraine from Russian invaders.

The City Hall calls on residents and visitors to join the city’s farewell ceremony and refrain from entertainment and celebrations during this time.

The funeral ceremony will begin at 11:00 a.m. in the Garrison Church of Ss. Peter and Paul. Afterwards, at approximately 11:30 a.m., a citywide farewell ceremony will take place on Rynok Square.

The defenders will be buried at Lychakiv Cemetery.

He studied at the Donetsk Specialised Secondary School of Physics and Mathematics No. 35. In 1999, he graduated from the Donetsk State Academy of Management with a degree in Organisational Management.

He was engaged in private entrepreneurship in various fields in Donetsk. In his spare time, he was actively involved in sports: he was fond of football, was the founder of the Uragan Bartativ team, and was awarded the title of Master of Sports of Ukraine in boxing.

In 2014, he and his family moved to Lviv. Here he started his own transport business.

From the first days of the full-scale invasion of the Russian Federation, despite his lack of combat experience and poor health, he voluntarily defended the state from the invaders. He defended the state on the territory of Zaporizhzhia, Donetsk, Kharkiv and Luhansk regions in the ranks of the 125th separate territorial defence brigade of the regional directorate “West” of the Territorial Defence Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. For his personal courage, he was awarded the “Steel Cross” Badge of Honour of the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, insignia of the Territorial Defence Forces Command, etc.

Dmytro Ushakov is survived by his wife, two children and a brother.

He studied at the Velykyi Doroshiv Secondary School, then entered the Velykyi Hrybovychi Lyceum of the Lviv City Council. He graduated from Lviv Polytechnic National University with a degree in Information Security.

After graduation, he worked in various fields in the city of Lviv, including programming. In his spare time, he was fond of sports and drawing, developing computer games, studying psychology and being an excellent cook.

With the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion, he defended the state from the Russian invaders. He performed combat missions in the ranks of the 33rd separate mechanised brigade of the Land Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

Andrii Fys is survived by his parents, sister, niece and extended family.

He studied at the Municipal Institution “Mariupol Secondary School of I-III Degrees No. 10 of the Mariupol City Council of the Donetsk Region”. At school, he was an extremely energetic child, practised jiu-jitsu and took an active part in local competitions.

Since childhood, he aspired to become a sailor, so while still at school he enrolled in preparatory courses at the Azov Maritime Institute of the National University “Odesa Maritime Academy”. Subsequently, he worked as a sushi chef at Bluefin for over a year.

He had an exceptional talent for drawing and was fond of carving in his spare time. According to his family, one could learn a lot from him: absolute honesty, kindness, immense love; dignity and justice were the most important principles for him. He advised his loved ones to “never be upset and always be confident in themselves”.

With the beginning of the full-scale invasion of the Russian Federation, he moved to Lviv region. After completing combat training in Zaporizhzhia region, he voluntarily joined the ranks of the 12th Azov Special Forces Brigade. He performed combat missions in the “hot” spots of the frontline.

Artur Katash is survived by his mother, two brothers, sister and fiancée.
