Tomorrow Lviv will say goodbye to five Ukrainian defenders

On Saturday, 17 February, Lviv will say goodbye to five soldiers. Andriy Navodylo, Ostap Iskiv, Yuriy Mykhailov, Bohdan Izhyk, and Oleksandr Martych defended Ukraine from Russian occupiers. Lviv City Hall calls on Lviv residents and guests to join the city’s farewell ceremony and refrain from holding entertainment events and celebrations during this time.

The funeral service for soldier Yuriy Mykhailov will take place at 09:30 in the Church of the Ascension (81a Shyroka Street).

The funeral service for the defenders Andriy Navodil, Ostap Iskiv and Yuriy Mykhailov will begin at 11:00 a.m. in the Garrison Church of Ss. Peter and Paul, at 11:30 a city farewell ceremony will be held on Rynok Square.

Ostap Iskiv and Yuriy Mykhailov will be buried at Lychakiv Cemetery in Lviv, and Andriy Navodil will be buried in the village of Dmytrze, Lviv region.

The funeral service for soldier Bohdan Izhyk will be held at 13:30 in the Church of the Ascension (81a Shyroka Street).

The funeral service for the defenders Bohdan Izhyk and Oleksandr Martych will begin at 15:00 in the Garrison Church of the Apostles Peter and Paul, at 15:00 in the Church of the Holy Cross. Peter and Paul, at 15:30 a city farewell ceremony will be held on Rynok Square.

Bohdan Izhyk and Oleksandr Martych will be buried at Lychakiv Cemetery in Lviv.

Biographical information on the defenders

Andriy Navodylo (08.12.1992-03.02.2024) A resident of Lviv.

In 2007, he graduated from Dmytrivska secondary school of I-II levels. Later, he studied at the Lviv Regional Council’s municipal institution “Lviv Lyceum with enhanced military and physical training named after the Heroes of Kruty”.

He graduated from Lviv State University of Internal Affairs with a degree in Law. He received a master’s degree in law from Ivan Franko National University of Lviv.

He is a career military man. During 2012-2017, he served under contract as part of a sniper company of the 80th separate Galician Air Assault Brigade of the Air Assault Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, and since 2014, he has been performing combat missions in the anti-terrorist operation zone. Andrii Navodylo was fond of military affairs and constantly improved his personal skills.

He was fond of sports, actively studied foreign languages, took IT courses and read a lot of literature – he always took books with him on assignments. In 2021, he joined the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine.

With the beginning of the full-scale invasion of Russia, he defended the state, first in the ranks of the 7th Carpathian Border Detachment, and more recently in the Luhansk Border Detachment named after the Hero of Ukraine Colonel Yevhen Pikus of the SBGS.

For conscientious performance of his duties, he was awarded the badge “For Courage in the Protection of the State Border” and the badge “Excellent Border Guard”.

Andrii Navodil is survived by his parents, wife, 6-month-old daughter and two sisters.

 

Yurii Mykhailov (07.12.1996-14.02.2024) A resident of Lviv.

He studied at the secondary school №64 in Lviv (today – Lyceum “Hrono” of the Lviv City Council). He graduated from the Lviv Polygraphic Specialist College of the Ukrainian Academy of Printing.

After graduation, he worked in the field of trade. He was an active member of the UNA-UNSO movement and was involved in military and patriotic activities. In his spare time, he was fond of tourism and rock climbing. According to his family, he was “an exceptionally kind, cheerful and intelligent person”.

On the first day of the full-scale invasion of the Russian Federation, he voluntarily stood up to defend his homeland from the invaders. He defended the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the state, first as a member of the 112th separate territorial defence brigade of the Regional Directorate “North” of the Territorial Defence Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, and later – of the military unit A4714. He performed combat missions in Kyiv, Kharkiv, Donetsk and Zaporizhzhia regions.

For personal courage, he was awarded the Golden Cross badge of the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

Yuriy Mykhailov is survived by his grandmother, parents and wife.

 

Ostap Iskiv (15.07.1979-07.02.2024) Was born in Lviv into a well-known intellectual family.
In 1986-1996, he studied at schools #76 and #34 named after Markiyan Shashkevych. During his studies, he joined the 41st Taras Bulba Kuren of Lviv Plast.

In 1997-2002, he studied at the Faculty of International Relations of the Ivan Franko National University of Lviv.

Ostap Iskiv was engaged in private entrepreneurship in the construction sector: he organised his own repair and construction team, provided design and furnishing of turnkey apartments. Thanks to his skilful, conscientious work, he gained a good professional reputation. He was a hard worker. He was very fond of his family and the whole family, and his daughter was his special pride and joy. He spent his holidays only in his native Carpathians, which had fascinated him since childhood.

He was an active participant in social and political life: he was a member of the election team of the presidential candidate Viktor Yushchenko in Lviv region, took part in the events of the Orange Revolution, coordinated Lviv volunteer units of the People’s Guard, and was also a member of Cossack units.

A participant in the Revolution of Dignity, he was a member of the 4th Cossack Hundred of the Maidan and was injured in the clashes in Mariinsky Park.

With the beginning of the full-scale invasion, he volunteered to defend his homeland from the invaders and joined the 33rd separate mechanised brigade of the Land Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. For his personal courage and exemplary service, he was awarded numerous decorations, including the commemorative badge “Defender of Ukraine”, the medal “For Invincibility”, etc.

Ostap Iskiv is survived by his parents, sister and daughter.

 

Bohdan Izhyk (25.01.1970-10.02.2024) A native of the village of Nyzhnye Vysotske.

He studied at the Nyzhnevysotske Gymnasium and later entered the Drohobych Oil and Gas College. After graduation, he did his military service.

In peacetime, he worked in the oil and gas industry in Ukraine and abroad, and during the last period – at a bakery in Lviv. He loved the outdoors and hiking in the woods.

With the beginning of the full-scale invasion of the Russian Federation, he stood up to defend his homeland from the invaders. He defended the territorial integrity and independence of the state as a member of the military unit A7081. He performed combat missions in Sumy and Zaporizhzhia regions.

Bohdan Izhyk is survived by his son, daughter and grandchildren.

 

Oleksandr Martych (25.03.1973-12.02.2024) was born in the village of Lopushanka-Khomina, Lviv region.

He studied at the secondary school of I-II levels in the village of Lopushanka-Khomyna. He received his education at the Sambir Professional College of Culture and Arts, a municipal institution of the Lviv Regional Council. Since childhood, he dreamed of becoming a soldier.

Since 1992, he served in the ranks of the border guards: The 7th Carpathian Border Guard Detachment, and since 2016 – the 23rd Maritime Guard Detachment of the Regional Maritime Guard Directorate of the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine. In his spare time, he was fond of music and football.

On 24 February, 2022, Oleksandr Martych was on duty in Mariupol. He took part in the defence of the city from the invaders, was stationed at the Azovstal plant and surrendered only after a direct order from the command. Oleksandr Martych returned home only on 7 June 2023.

Oleksandr Martych is survived by his wife, son, daughter, brother and sister.
