Hogweed Sosnowsky: Danger and Control Methods

Hogweed Sosnowsky is a dangerous plant that causes burns upon contact with the skin.

The primary locations of Hogweed Sosnowsky distribution are riverbanks, roadsides, degraded pastures, and abandoned fields. The plant can reach a height of 3-5 meters, and the stem thickness can be up to 10 centimeters. The seeds of the hogweed continue to ripen even after the stalk is cut and can remain viable in the soil for up to 15 years. The plant contains furocoumarin, which causes severe burns under the influence of solar energy.

Practical experience has demonstrated effective methods for destroying hogweed: systematic mowing and chemical treatment. “Glyphosate group preparations are recommended against hogweed,” experts note. Chemical treatment should be carried out 2-3 times per season.

Plants should not be mowed during the end of flowering as it will not be effective. All work with hogweed should be conducted wearing protective clothing, and specialists should have the appropriate clearance.
