Zashkiv honors 134th anniversary of Colonel Yevhen Konovalets’ birth with ceremony and museum renewal plans

A commemorative event took place in the village of Zashkiv, part of the Lviv community, marking the 134th anniversary of the birth of renowned Ukrainian political and military leader Colonel Yevhen Konovalets.

The celebration gathered local residents, city officials, and supporters of Ukrainian heritage.

Representing the Lviv City Council were First Deputy Mayor Andriy Moskalenko and Head of the Office for Agglomeration and Community Development Nataliia Alekseieva.
The day began with a Divine Liturgy at the Church of Archangel Michael and a memorial service at the Konovalets family burial site. A public gathering was then held near Konovalets’ house-museum.

“His words—‘In the great drama of today we have a choice: to be creators or victims of history’—are still deeply relevant. Today, as then, Ukrainians choose to shape their own destiny,” Moskalenko said.

The museum in Zashkiv, a division of the Lviv Historical Museum, is under regional management. However, the city has expressed willingness to support its modernization. Deputy Mayor for Urban Planning Liubomyr Zubach noted that a concept for renovation has already been developed.

Proposed improvements include:

  • building a small information center with an accessible restroom;

  • installing pedestrian paths;

  • adding outdoor furniture;

  • creating an open terrace next to the barn.

“This is not a superficial renovation, but a comprehensive update that will turn the museum into a modern and accessible space,” Zubach said. He also called on business leaders and regional authorities to support the project.
