By default, the WhatsApp messenger automatically downloads photos, videos and other files and saves them to your smartphone’s gallery. As a result, the device’s storage fills up quickly, and personal media from chats and groups can end up in the main gallery. Users can change these settings and control themselves which files from WhatsApp are saved to the phone’s memory.
To limit automatic saving, you first need to open the messenger settings. To do this in WhatsApp, tap the three-dot icon in the top right-hand corner and select “Settings”.
In the settings menu, go to the “Storage and Data” section. Here you will find the “Media Auto-Download” options, which control the automatic downloading of photos, audio, videos and documents depending on the type of connection — mobile data, Wi‑Fi or never.
In this section, the user can specify separately which categories of files are allowed to download automatically and for which this option should be disabled. If you set media to “never”, the app will stop saving them to the device’s storage without asking.
Another way to hide files from the gallery is to change the “Media Visibility” setting for a specific chat or group. To do this, open the required chat, tap its name, find the “Media Visibility” option and switch it off. After that, new media files from this conversation will no longer appear in the phone’s default gallery.
If needed, these settings can be applied separately for each contact or group chat. This allows you, for example, to keep auto-saving enabled for important personal conversations but switch it off for large groups where a lot of unnecessary images and videos are shared.
After changing the settings, it is worth opening the gallery and checking that new media files from WhatsApp no longer appear automatically. If necessary, you can adjust the settings again at any time.
