At a meeting of the Commission on Culture, Information Policy and Promotion of the Lviv Regional Council on 6 July, members backed an initiative to proclaim 2027 in Lviv Region as the Year of Roman Shukhevych, the Ukrainian Insurgent Army and Oleh Olzhych. The corresponding appeal is to be submitted for consideration at a session of the regional council.
As members of the commission noted, 2027 will mark 120 years since the birth of Roman Shukhevych, general-chornyzhyi and Commander-in-Chief of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army, as well as of Oleh Olzhych, a Ukrainian poet, head of the cultural and educational department and leader of the Organisation of Ukrainian Nationalists. In addition, next year will see the 85th anniversary of the founding of the UPA.
During the meeting, deputies also supported an appeal from Ihor Tymets, Director of the Lviv Regional Council Municipal Institution “Historical and Local History Museum”, regarding renaming the institution. It is proposed to change its name to the “Museum of the History of Galicia”.
In a separate section of the meeting, participants discussed problematic issues in Ukrainian-Polish relations in the sphere of historical and national memory. Following the discussion, it was decided to prepare an appeal on these matters for consideration at a session of the Lviv Regional Council, as well as to strengthen horizontal contacts with partner cities in Poland.
The Chair of the Commission, Sviatoslav Sheremeta, proposed appealing to the Lviv Regional Military Administration with an initiative to develop a package of measures to counter disinformation, in particular to consider setting up a specialised centre staffed by experts in Polish-Ukrainian relations. The discussion also touched on the need to reinstate a grant support programme for historical research, as well as to develop cultural diplomacy and media cooperation.
We also propose appealing to the Regional Military Administration to develop a package of measures to counter disinformation, and possibly to create an appropriate centre employing specialists in Polish-Ukrainian relations. We also insist on reinstating the grant programme for historical research; cultural diplomacy and media engagement are to be encouraged, said Sviatoslav Sheremeta
