In the Lviv Park “Sandy Lakes” they started draining the reservoirs before cleaning them

Oleksandra Sladkova, head of the Department of Ecology and Natural Resources of the LMR, spoke about the beginning of water discharge from the lakes in the “Sandy Lakes” park and described how the process of cleaning the water bodies will take place.

Thus, according to Oleksandra Sladkova, the process of draining the water from the reservoirs will last 2 weeks, and therefore residents will soon be able to see what is at the bottom of the lakes.

Below we present the answers of the head of the city’s Department of Ecology and Natural Resources to the most common questions about cleaning in “Sand Lakes”.

Won’t the ducks die?

No, the ducks will not die. Now is the time of year when there are no young ducks that can’t fly. Ducks will simply fly to nearby lakes.

What will happen to the fish?

Decent specimens of fish will be relocated to Levandiv Lake. Other specimens, in particular invasive catfishes and rattans, should not live in any reservoir of Lviv, so they will go to feed the foxes in the Home of rescued animals.

Are there no other methods of cleaning the lakes so that they do not drain?

The amount of organic matter at the bottom is excessive, and it is this that rots and releases hydrogen sulfide, in which all living things die at the end of winter (and sumps do not help). This organic matter accumulates from the fact that a large number of leaves fall into the water, and from the fact that each of the dozens of ducks produces 100 grams of waste per day, which settles to the bottom. Residents who feed the ducks with bread add their own, as well as fish, water rats and water plants. This amount of organic matter cannot be removed by other methods. There is also the problem of invasive fish, which also need to be removed from the lake, and this is impossible other than through descent. Invasive fish do not allow local fish to live there, which are supposed to protect the balance of the reservoir and prevent them from becoming overgrown or polluted.

In 5 years it will be dirty again and will be drained again?

No, because after cleaning, the lake is stabilized in other ways so that new organic matter does not accumulate and rot. In particular:

– aerators, which must be laid on the bottom, will saturate the water with oxygen and there will be no stagnation of hydrogen sulfide;

– proper stocking of the reservoir – several tree stumps will be placed on the bottom so that the fry have a place to hide;

– the amount of reeds will be adjusted: a small amount of reeds filters water, an excessive amount – creates additional organic matter from the rotting of plant residues. Therefore, adjusting the depth will adjust the amount of reeds (we will leave an island in the middle so that there is a place for waterfowl to hide);

– the right bacteria will be introduced to start the ecosystem.

Where will they get water from?

Water will come seasonally with precipitation, and there are special funds in the budget for filling the reservoir with water from the water supply (sodium hypochlorite is used for stabilization, not chlorine).

Why during the war?

Improvement funds cannot be spent on anything other than improvement. You can simply not spend them and they will disappear at the end of the year.

Will this all help?

Yes, it will help. How cleaning, regulation of reeds and proper stocking of Levandiv Lake helped. Everyone can come and look at it.
