Drohobych Prepares for Upper Secondary School Reform

In Drohobych, there is active discussion about the reform of upper secondary school, which aims to change the approach to educating students in years 10–12. This is not just a change of names, but a rethinking of the role of lyceums and the quality of educational offerings. The Drohobych City Council has already approved a plan for forming a network of lyceums, including the Drohobych Scientific Lyceum named after Bohdan Lepky, Lyceum No. 2, and Stebnyk Lyceum No. 7.

The reform envisages that upper secondary school should be concentrated in capable centres that can provide a wide choice of profiles and quality education. This means that upper secondary school must be competitive not only in status but also in content, including profiles, STEM directions, and links with universities.

In Drohobych, the issue of the Scientific Lyceum named after Lepky, where 781 students are enrolled, is particularly relevant. The institution is more burdened by the basic school than the upper secondary, which requires changes in its structure if it is to become a key centre for upper secondary education.

Local authorities, educators, and parents must prepare for changes based on real data about the contingent, demographics, and infrastructure, rather than emotional campaigns. This will allow the creation of an upper secondary school system that meets the new demands of the times.
