Chervonohrad residents consulted on how to rename the streets

On May 3, the second stage of the public discussion on renaming certain streets in Chervonohrad, the village of Hirnyk, the villages of Boryatyn, Volsvin and Dobryachyn took place in the Central City Library. It was held in the format of a conference to which experts, local literary critics, local historians and historians were invited. They clarified the historical figures and names proposed by the city’s residents.

This was reported in the Chervonohrad City Council.

The Rada decided to rename Popovycha and Pushkina Streets in Chervonohrad on May 9; in Girnyk – Gagarin and Popovych streets; in Boryatyn – Kuzma Pelekhaty and Gagarin; in Volsvin – Ostrovsky Street; in Dobryachyn – Popovych.

In total, the first round, which took place in the form of an electronic discussion, received 47 proposals for new street names. In addition, there were proposals on which the Chervonohrad City Council did not decide to rename Korolyova, Gogol and Sakharov streets in Chervonohrad. Accordingly, consideration of this issue will also be submitted for public discussion.

The conference did not provide for the adoption of a decision, but only for discussion, provision of necessary information and public consultation. First, the name of Popovycha Street was considered. A total of 20 variants of new names were received. In particular, from Svetlana Rostun – about the perpetuation of the memory of our famous Hero Yuri Lugovsky. The participants of the conference agreed that the school №9 where he studied should be named after him, or one of the city squares located nearby. And local historian Olena Zamoyska suggested naming the street after Ignatius Polotniuk.

However, experts and residents present expressed the position that Popovych, although born in the Soviet Union, is an astronaut of Ukrainian origin. That is why those present unanimously voted for the inexpediency of renaming Popovycha Street in Chervonohrad.

Pushkin Street in Chervonohrad has a chance to change its name to “Museum”. Most of the proposed options (there were 22 in total) proved this. Galyna Hrynyk, the head of the city museum of the history of religion, argued for such a renaming. Instead, Nadiya Pashchuk, on behalf of the Prozerok Society, suggested naming the street after Yulia Burko, taking into account the merits of our local master of decorative and applied arts, a well-known Easter egg painter. Another variant of the name of this street, proposed by Svitlana Bordun – Palatsova, was also considered.

The street will also change its name on May 9. Due to its geographical location, in the future it may be called “Country”.

After hearing information about the identity of the writer Volodymyr Korolenko, the opinion of the conference participants was almost unanimous – to leave the name of this street on the map of our city.

The names of two streets were proposed for renaming in the village of Girnyk – Gagarin and Popovych. As the head of the village Vasyl Terekh noted, the fact of renaming is a certain problem for people, as they will have to change some documents. But if necessary, residents expressed readiness to change the name of Gagarin Street to Chornovil (including the lane), and Popovych – to Stepan Bandera.

In the village of Boryatyn they also plan to change the names of two streets: Gagarin and Kuzma Pelekhaty. Many options have been proposed. To this end, according to the head of the island Iryna Chipak, a discussion was held, as a result of which the majority of residents voted to rename Gagarin Street to Pavel Palyushinsky, and Kuzma Pelekhaty – to Heroes of the Maidan or Stepan Bandera.

Halyna Lobashchuk provided the audience with information about Mykola Ostrovsky, after whom one of the streets in the village of Volsvyn is named. So it is hoped that in the near future it will also be renamed.

Instead, its residents categorically opposed the renaming of Popovycha Street in the village of Dobryachyn. They wrote a petition, which was voiced by Chervonohrad District Council Deputy Olga Ogorodnyk.

As for the renaming of Korolyova, Sakharov and Gogol streets in Chervonohrad, the conference participants discussed this issue, analyzed the contribution of these individuals to the development of Ukrainian and world science, culture and democracy, and unanimously called for their renaming.

It should be noted that no decisions were made at the conference – it was informative and explanatory. So the final word is for the residents. They will vote to determine the name of a street, after which the executive committee must make a decision.
