At the lake on Pancha Street in Lviv, the membrane of the lower lake has been repaired

The lower lake on Pancha Street in Lviv is being filled with water again after damage to the waterproofing membrane was repaired by the contractor at its own expense. This was reported by the Shevchenkivskyi District Administration of Lviv.

According to the administration, the day before the contractor eliminated defects in the membrane that had caused the water level in the lower lake not to be maintained. Already the next morning, the reservoir began to be filled with water from a specially drilled 35-metre-deep well.

Damage to the membrane was also found in the upper lake on Pancha Street. As Mykola Begei, Deputy Head of the Shevchenkivskyi District Administration, explained, similar work will be carried out there from next week: stones will be removed from the bottom, the membrane will be inspected, the leak points will be sealed, and after that the reservoir will begin to be filled.

The official noted that all work to eliminate defects in the membrane is being carried out by the contractor at its own expense, while other works to restore the lakes and landscape the surrounding area are financed by a private investor. No funds from the city budget are being allocated for this work.

According to Mykola Begei, in spring new benches and bins were installed by the lakes and young trees were planted. Still to come are the laying of decking on the terrace, the installation of handrails on the small bridge, the installation of street lighting and the installation of elements of a children’s playground.

Renovation work to develop the lakes on Pancha Street was suspended in 2022 with the start of the full-scale war and resumed in August 2025 thanks to the investor’s funds. This made it possible to continue the main works to restore the reservoir and landscape the area, but it will not be possible to fully implement the original scope of works – key elements will be completed so that residents can use the space and relax.

The project to develop the lake on Pancha Street won the Lviv Participatory Budget 2019. After this, at the request of the Shevchenkivskyi District Administration, LKP “Institute of Spatial Development” drew up the design and estimate documentation, and in the same year renovation work began, continuing until the end of 2021. During this time, a concrete basin for the lake, drainage, utilities, decking, a small bridge, pavements and other elements were installed.

Due to the start of the full-scale war, the facility was not completed. To preserve the works already carried out, in 2023 minimal mothballing was undertaken in accordance with the recommendations of LKP “Institute of Spatial Development”.

The lake on Pancha Street is an artificial reservoir created in the 1950s–80s as part of a land drainage and runoff system to prepare the area for the construction of a housing estate. The reservoir is fed by groundwater and rainwater, and has no natural outflow because the Klepariv stream was piped into sewers in the same period, while subsequent development of the district led to its shallowing.
