Burning firewood and dead wood can cause air pollution in the Lviv region

What is the air situation in the Lviv region? The Department of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Lviv Oblast State Administration reported the latest information

Over the past 24 hours, the media have been spreading information about air pollution coming from a cloud from Poland. Other sources, picking up on this information, claim that the pollution is spreading from Eastern Europe.

However, according to the observations of stationary air quality monitoring stations, a slight increase in dust (PM2.5); (PM10) was observed in the evening for a short period of time, namely in Rava-Ruska and Boryslavska territorial communities. Most likely, this situation is related to the burning of firewood and cleaning of household plots, which causes such short-term exceedances, as the smoke from burning grass is acrid, thick and suffocating.

In Stryi and Lviv communities, where stationary monitoring stations are installed, no exceedances were recorded.

The stationary air quality monitoring stations installed by the Department of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Regional State Administration are currently operating in test mode.

“Burning dead wood not only causes significant damage to the environment, but also worsens the quality of the air we breathe. Burning plant waste releases a significant amount of smoke particles (dust, nitrogen oxide, carbon monoxide, heavy metals and carcinogenic compounds). Communities need a local control mechanism, knowledge of composting, waste management and other alternative methods of preserving the ecosystem. We urge you to treat the environment responsibly and with understanding, it is an integral part of our lives, and its preservation depends on our consciousness and actions,” said Oksana Viytyk, acting director of the Department of Ecology and Natural Resources of the regional state administration.
