In Lviv, they showed a visualization of the cable car to the High Castle

The cable car in Lviv can provide access not only to the High Castle, but also to the priority area of Pidzamche

Recently, as the mayor of the city Andriy Sadovy reported during the session on April 27, the LMR signed a memorandum with the Ministry of Internal Affairs regarding the transfer of a plot of land to Lviv for the construction of a cable car to the High Castle.

At the All-Ukrainian Mobility Forum, the Lviv City Council’s Department of Architecture and Urbanism showed how a cable car might look like in Lviv.

As the administration said, 70% of the territory around the High Castle is a UNESCO territory and, from the point of view of recreational or touristic potential, does not work effectively.

The construction of the cable car will allow more people to visit the High Castle, which is one of the largest parks in Lviv.

“First of all, there is an opportunity for visitors to get to the High Castle, it is one of the largest parks in Lviv, which could perform a recreational function. That is, now, due to the difficult terrain and difficult access even to the lower route of the High Castle, not all visitors can afford this walk or visit it,” says the Department of Architecture and Urbanism of the LMR.

It is noted that this situation affects the tourist attraction. Thus, according to management estimates, there were about 2.2 million tourists in Lviv before the coronavirus pandemic, but only 150,000 of them visited the High Castle. Also, a small number of tourists know about the Pidzamche microdistrict.

“If we consider the issue of the accessibility of Pidzamche from the point of view of urban planning documentation, there is a proposal to build a chord under the hills with natural relief and natural green areas. Instead, compared to this proposal, the cable car creates an opportunity for us to meet this need for mobility and to facilitate communication between the two parts of the district,” the administration notes.

The cable car in Lviv can provide access not only to the High Castle, but also to the priority area of Pidzamche. Therefore, residents and guests of the city can reach Pidzamche by cable car in 15 minutes.

It is planned that the first station of the cable car will be located near the Memorial to the Heroes of the Heavenly Hundred — near the museum of Metropolitan Sheptytskyi.

The second station can be the lower terrace of the High Castle.

According to the project, the third station will be the “High Castle” archaeological museum near the mound of the Union of Lublin.

The fourth station will be located near the Lviv Factory of Artificial Diamonds and Diamond Tools.

The Department of Architecture and Urbanism cannot yet say exactly how many cabins there will be on the cable car. In particular, it will be calculated taking into account the need and how much this station will be loaded. Despite this, it is planned that the booths will be among the smallest and will be able to accommodate about 10 people.

As of 2019, the estimated total cost of designing and building the cable car complex was estimated at more than UAH 330 million. According to the main estimated technical and economic indicators of the cable car complex, its length should be 524 m, the height difference should be 84 m.

The average speed of the cable car cabin will be about 4 m/s. In 2019, the city hall planned that the cable car will have 3 stations, and the total number of cabins will be 17 units.
