46-year-old Lviv woman becomes a mother for the first time at the Mother and Child Clinic

At the Mother and Child Clinic of the University Hospital, a boy weighing 3140 g and measuring 51 cm in length was born to a 46-year-old woman from Lviv, for whom this was her first delivery. The woman wished to remain anonymous, but agreed to share her story to support those who dream of having a child yet hesitate because of their age or possible difficulties. The pregnancy occurred after an in vitro fertilisation (IVF) procedure.

The mother admits that the path to the birth of her son was long and emotionally challenging, but she has never once regretted her decision to undergo treatment.

“We waited for this child for a very long time. There were many worries, but I believed that everything would work out. When I first heard him cry, I realised that all the years of waiting had not been in vain. This feeling is impossible to put into words,” the mother shares.

The couple named their newborn son Petro. They chose the name in honour of the woman’s husband and her grandfather, so that the child would continue the family tradition and be associated with the strength, wisdom and kindness of his closest relatives.

Throughout the entire pregnancy, the patient was under the close supervision of doctors at the antenatal clinic and specialists from the Mother and Child Clinic. The medical team regularly assessed her condition and, when necessary, admitted her to hospital for additional examinations, after which she returned home.

At 39 weeks of pregnancy, the doctors decided to deliver the baby by caesarean section.

Obstetrician-gynaecologist at the Mother and Child Clinic of the University Hospital, Bohdan Hrytsyshyn, explains that a caesarean section was chosen because the baby was in the breech position, as this was considered the safest option for both mother and baby. According to him, a healthy boy was born.

The doctor emphasises that this positive outcome was made possible thanks to continuous monitoring of the pregnancy and well-coordinated teamwork: specialists from the Mother and Child Clinic and the doctor from the antenatal clinic were in constant contact, jointly planning examinations and supporting the patient right up to the birth.

Now the mother and little Petro are feeling well and are already at home. The woman expressed her sincere gratitude to all the clinic’s medical staff for their support, care and attention throughout the pregnancy and during the birth, noting that she would recommend this facility to other women as a place to give birth.

The doctors stress that modern medicine enables women to become mothers even after the age of 40. At the same time, they advise planning a pregnancy responsibly, undergoing regular check-ups and remaining under the supervision of an experienced team of specialists, which is especially important for patients of more advanced reproductive age.
