Lviv OKHMATDYT specialists successfully treat children diagnosed with vascular malformation

Vascular malformation is a congenital disorder of vascular development that can cause uneven growth of the limbs and curvature of the spine

Specialists at Lviv OKHMATDYT successfully treat children diagnosed with vascular malformation. The consequences of vascular malformation are different limb lengths and a curved spine. According to experts, this is not a sentence, the main thing is to seek treatment in time.

“When we talk about vascular malformations of the extremities, we think of Klippel-Trenone and Parks-Weber syndromes. They have their own specific vascular characteristics and often orthopaedic complications. However, there can also be exclusively isolated limb malformations, most often venous,” said Yulia Khomyn, a paediatric vascular surgeon.

The peculiarity of malformations in childhood is that they grow with the child. It is important to control coagulation to prevent the risk of thrombosis.

“Accordingly, we select the optimal treatment method, and the children remain under our constant supervision. The approach is very individual: it can be conservative treatment, sclerotherapy, endovascular or open surgery,” adds Yulia Khomyn.

Children are given a chance to have limbs of equal length by the age of 16-18.

“Recently, there was a case when people from another region came, and the child was 15 years old and, unfortunately, nothing could be done. This technology is not suitable for this age. It is best to visit doctors from the age of 3-4, and we start performing surgical interventions from the age of 6-7 and up to 10-11 years, up to a maximum of 12 years. In this case, we will be able to achieve maximum results,” emphasises Oleksandr Korolkov, Head of the Clinic of Neuroorthopedics, Traumatology and Rehabilitation of Children.

It is very important to see a specialist in time and start the necessary treatment.
