In Lviv, due to the forecast rise in air temperature to 38°C, municipal services have switched to an enhanced operating mode. Throughout the day, the city streets, including tram tracks, will be sprayed every hour by watering vehicles, with private machinery also being brought in. This was announced by Lviv’s First Deputy Mayor, Andriy Moskalenko.
According to the official, the decision was taken following an emergency meeting with the heads of the district administrations. The Main Department of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine in Lviv Region is also joining efforts to dampen urban areas.
The Shevchenkivskyi District Administration clarified that municipal services will be watering carriageways, pavements and tram tracks. They stress that such measures help reduce surface heating, lower air dust levels and make being outdoors more comfortable in the heat.
Residents are advised to avoid staying in direct sunlight unless absolutely necessary. If going outside is unavoidable, they are recommended to carry water with them or use the city’s drinking fountains. Lviv residents are also asked to leave bowls of water near their workplaces or homes for animals.
Both decorative and drinking fountains are operating in the city. Decorative fountains are in operation on Svobody Avenue near the Opera House, on Halytska Square (the “Da Vinci” fountain), on Krynychna Square near Pidzamche station, on Dvirtseva Square near the Railway Station, on Koliyivshchyny Square, on Kopernyka Street (“Well with Lions” and “Volodii”), as well as on Mytna Square. The “Ivasyk-Telesyk” fountain is working in Stryiskyi Park.
Drinking fountains have been installed at 1 Rynok Square (near City Hall), on Svobody Avenue between the Röhring flowerbed and the monument to Taras Shevchenko (at the junction with P. Beryndy Street), on Svobody Avenue near the Opera House (opposite the National Museum), in the “Na Valakh” square on Pidvalna Street near the sports ground (the fountain has a separate basin for animals), on Stepana Bandery Street near the Organ Hall, on General T. Chuprynky Street, 85 (Frankivskyi District Administration), at the junction of Stepana Bandery Street and General T. Chuprynky Street, on Ye. Malanyuka Square, on Mytna Square, on Lychakivska Street, 175a near the Church of the Protection of the Blessed Virgin Mary, at the junction of T. Shevchenka and D. Bortnianskoho Streets, on Dvirtseva Square near the Railway Station, and on Vyhovskoho Street, 34.
In Stryiskyi Park, two additional new drinking fountains have been installed, with separate basins for people and animals. In addition, two water misters have been set up on Rynok Square — in front of and behind City Hall — which residents and visitors can also use during the heat.
