Neonatal surgery room opened at St. Nicholas Children’s Hospital in Lviv

A newly equipped surgical suite dedicated specifically to infants has been launched at the neonatal wing of St. Nicholas Children’s Hospital in Lviv, part of the First Medical Association of Lviv. This allows urgent procedures to be carried out on-site without transporting newborns to other buildings.

Previously, surgeries for newborns were performed in general operating rooms, requiring delicate transport. Now, with this specialized unit outfitted with state-of-the-art equipment for the smallest patients, doctors can perform critical interventions directly within the neonatal department.

According to hospital director Ivan Miskiv, the first operation in the new room has already been successfully completed—a minimally invasive liver biopsy guided by ultrasound. The procedure was conducted without incisions, allowing for highly accurate diagnostics and enhanced safety for the infant.

St. Nicholas Children’s Hospital is one of Ukraine’s largest pediatric healthcare facilities. It offers comprehensive care from birth through adolescence, including emergency services, high-tech surgical treatment following international protocols, and advanced diagnostics with expert-level CT and angiography equipment.

The hospital is known for its experienced specialists who assist in childbirth, care for premature infants weighing as little as 500 grams, and successfully perform complex surgeries, including congenital heart defect corrections.

Additionally, the hospital is part of the UNBROKEN medical ecosystem, which supports victims of Russian aggression. The UNBROKEN KIDS rehabilitation center provides physical recovery, prosthetics, and mental health support for children with mine-related injuries, gunshot wounds, burns, and other trauma.
