How to Avoid Infections During Flooding: Expert Advice

As a result of heavy rains and flooding, it is important to take care of your health. Flooding can become a source of dangerous infections, especially intestinal ones.

Here are the main recommendations to follow:

Do not drink water from flooded wells – microorganisms from toilets, cemeteries, and landfills may have contaminated it. If you don’t have access to drinking water, be sure to boil it for at least 10–15 minutes.

Do not consume food that may have been flooded. This applies to products in cardboard or damaged packaging, showing signs of spoilage (smell, color, texture), with unsealed lids or homemade preserves, in cans with bulging lids or rust.

Vegetables, fruits, and berries – only after thorough washing. Wash in boiled or disinfected water. Then pour boiling water over them.

All products – only after thermal processing: boil, fry, bake.

Wash your hands with soap, especially before preparing and consuming food.

Disinfect dishes and kitchen utensils: first wash in hot water with detergent, then rinse with safe water (bottled or specially purified), treat with boiling water, and let them dry.

Clothes that have been in contact with flooded water need to be washed and disinfected before use.

Following these simple but important rules will help avoid outbreaks of infections and protect your health and the lives of your loved ones. Take care of yourself!
