
7 June 2026 in the village of Kariv, a ceremonial event was held to mark the 110th anniversary of the birth of Petro Duzhy, a figure of the national liberation struggle, writer and member of the Organisation of Ukrainian Nationalists.
The event began with a requiem service at the monument “To the Fighters for Ukraine’s Freedom”, celebrated by the UGCC priest of the village of Kariv, Fr Petro Loza. Those present honoured the memory of all who fought for Ukraine’s independence and recalled the life and work of Petro Duzhy.
At the start of the ceremony, participants together performed the Anthem of Ukrainian Nationalists “We Were Born in a Great Hour”, and the event concluded with the song “Oh, the Red Viburnum in the Meadow”.
The concert programme featured a performance by the teachers’ ensemble of the Viktor Matiuk Gymnasium with the song “Sons of Ukraine” and the children’s ensemble of the same gymnasium with the song “The Insurgents Are Already Marching”. Soloist Oksana Yarema performed the pieces “Ukraine Went to God” and “Mists Over the Land”. The “Harmoniya” ensemble of the People’s House in the village of Domashiv presented the songs “I Pray for You, Ukraine” and “My Heart Is There Where Ukraine Is”.
Poems by Petro Duzhy were recited during the event. The poem “Prologue”, as well as the work by Stepan Ivaseiko “With the Heart of Prometheus”, dedicated to Petro Duzhy, was read by Zoryana Pihura. Poet, artist and sculptor Stepan Ivaseiko shared his memories of Petro Duzhy.
Petro Duzhy’s daughter, Larysa Petrivna Ivantsiv, addressed the participants of the ceremony. The final chord of the event was the “Prayer of the Ukrainian Nationalist” and the “Ten Commandments-Questions to Ukrainians”, recited by senior pupils of the Viktor Matiuk Gymnasium.
The organisers and participants stressed that the memory of Petro Duzhy is important for today’s generations, as his life, struggle and creative work remain an example of devotion to the national idea and love for Ukraine.
