An exhibition of Oleksa Novakivskyi’s drawings opens in the Lviv Organ Hall

This year, the entire art world is celebrating the 150th anniversary of the birth of the great Ukrainian painter and teacher Oleksa Novakivskyi. As part of the celebrations, an exhibition of the master’s works from private collections will be opened in the gallery of the Lviv Organ Hall.

The Lviv Organ Hall invites you to the grand opening of the exhibition on August 19 at 5:00 p.m. Entrance to the gallery is free. The visitors will be presented with drawings by Oleksa Novakivskyi, which are currently kept in private collections. Thanks to the cooperation of the Organ Hall with the Gallery of Contemporary Sacred Art “ICONART”, as well as with the special support of the curators of this project: Iryna Rizun, Kostyantyn Shumsky and Roman Zilink, the works of the great master will be able to be seen by everyone.

The Organ Hall Gallery is a unique exhibition space that demonstrates the synergy of various types of art. Every month you can see a new author’s exhibition here – painting, photo art, historical documents and even a collection of butterflies. Each element of the exposition is highlighted separately thanks to the special architecture and special lighting. Aesthetics in details is the most important thing for the organizers.

About the exhibition coordinators:

  • Iryna Rizun is the head of the Art Memorial Museum of Oleksa Novakivskyi, researcher of Oleksa Novakivskyi’s work, curator of exhibition projects of the National Museum in Lviv named after Andrey Sheptytskyi.

Oleksa Novakivskyi is a Ukrainian artist who for a long time was at the center of the cultural and artistic life of Galicia. His work became a whole era in Ukrainian painting, a kind of mirror of the life of Western Ukrainian society. Novakivskyi studied in Odesa and the Kraków Academy of Fine Arts. In 1913, he moved to Lviv at the invitation of Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytskyi.

Novakivskyi’s images often come from Ukrainian folk mythology, from the Greek epic, or from the Gospel or Old Testament stories. In 1923, the artist opened a studio in his workshop, later named the “Novakivskyi School”, which became his most important public cause.
