Lviv is actively working on the transition to alternative fuels. This topic has gained special relevance right now, given the military invasion of Russia and possible threats during the heating season.
Therefore, in cooperation with Naftogaz Ukraine, they intend to build a new biofuel boiler house in Lviv that will be able to heat a quarter of the houses in the city with a central connection.
“We are launching a very large and powerful project together with Naftogaz of Ukraine.” We will build a powerful facility that will generate 40 MW and this will cover a large percentage of our city’s heating needs. With that project, we are actually giving up gas and switching to wood waste,” said Andrii Sadovy, the mayor of Lviv.
A corresponding memorandum on cooperation in the construction of a new boiler house has already been signed and the first steps in the implementation of the project have begun. Construction financing is undertaken by Naftogaz of Ukraine.
“With a shortage and sky-high gas prices in Europe, the transition from natural gas to biomass, to waste, to garbage – these are the steps that must be taken. We talked about it with many mayors of other cities. But what is the advantage of Lviv? Here we can do it much faster. While others are talking, Lviv is doing.
Now we are starting active work on this project. There was still a preparatory legal phase. We plan to launch this facility at the beginning of February next year. When this facility will start using wood instead of natural gas.
This project is energy security for the city, it is an excellent example of responsible attitude and business management,” emphasized Yuriy Vitrenko, head of Naftogaz of Ukraine.
According to him, the cost of building a boiler house on biofuel will be approximately UAH 1 billion.
