In Lviv region, 49-year-old coordinator of a religious community sentenced for evading mobilisation

In Lviv region, a 49-year-old resident of Lviv district has been sentenced to 3 years’ imprisonment for evading conscription for military service during mobilisation. This was reported by the Pustomyty District Prosecutor’s Office.

In court, prosecutors proved that in June 2024 a military medical commission found the man fit for military service on health grounds, as confirmed by a medical report.

After this, he was served with a call-up notice requiring him to report to the territorial recruitment and social support centre for subsequent deployment to a military unit. However, on the specified day the reservist failed to appear at the TRSSC without valid reason.

The resident of Lviv region explained his failure to appear by referring to his religious beliefs. According to him, he coordinates the activities of a local religious community, takes care of its operational and administrative needs, and also assists during religious gatherings.

The court did not recognise these arguments as grounds for exemption from his constitutional duty, stating that the defendant’s actions violated the requirements of current legislation. The man was found guilty under Article 336 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine and was sentenced to three years’ imprisonment.

The pre-trial investigation in the case was conducted by investigators of Investigation Unit No. 1 of Lviv District Police Department No. 2 of the Main Directorate of the National Police in Lviv region. The court verdict will enter into legal force after the expiry of the time limit for lodging an appeal.
