In Lviv region, driver to spend 5 years in prison for fatal road accident involving 14-year-old girl

In the Lviv region, a 21-year-old Lviv resident has been sentenced to an actual punishment of 5 years' imprisonment for causing a fatal road traffic collision in the village of Malechkovychi. This was reported by the Lviv Regional Prosecutor's Office.

According to the investigation and the court, on 24 August 2025, a law faculty student, while driving a Skoda Fabia, committed a gross breach of the Highway Code. Approaching an uncontrolled pedestrian crossing, he failed to pay due attention, did not reduce his speed and hit a 14-year-old girl.

As a result of the collision, the minor sustained extremely severe injuries and died in intensive care a few days later. According to the findings of comprehensive engineering-transport and forensic examinations, the driver had every technical opportunity to notice the pedestrian in time and avoid running her over, but failed to do so.

The court found the driver guilty of violating road safety rules that led to the victim's death (Part 2 of Article 286 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine). In March 2026, the Pustomyty District Court sentenced him to 5 years' imprisonment. The defence lodged an appeal, but in June 2026 the court of appeal upheld the sentence.

Once the decision became final, the Lviv Regional Prosecutor's Office took measures to ensure its enforcement. Officers of the criminal police unit of Police Department No. 3 of Lviv District Police Directorate No. 2 of the Main Directorate of the National Police in Lviv region detained the convicted man. He has now been placed in a remand centre and will shortly be transferred to a penal institution to serve his sentence.
