In the Sambir district, a 25-year-old resident of the Sambir area has been sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment for causing a fatal road traffic collision while intoxicated and fleeing the scene. This was reported by juvenile prosecutors of the Lviv Regional Prosecutor’s Office.
The court found the man guilty of the fact that on the evening of 1 October last year, in the village of Verkhivtsi in the Sambir district, while driving a VAZ 2107 car, he ran into a 17-year-old pedestrian who was walking along the roadside. According to the investigation, the street was well lit, the girl’s clothing was clearly visible in the dark, and she was holding a phone with the torch switched on.
It was established that the driver got behind the wheel while drunk and exceeded the speed limit in the built-up area. After hitting the girl, he did not stop to provide assistance to the victim but immediately drove away from the scene. Later, he left the car in a friend’s yard, disguising the damage with old clothes, and continued drinking alcohol, attempting to create the impression that he had become intoxicated only after the collision.
The 17-year-old girl, left without assistance, died at the scene from multiple injuries. Her body was discovered by her mother, who went out to look for her when her daughter did not return home on time. The woman called law enforcement officers, who quickly located the vehicle, and the driver was detained under Article 208 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine a few hours after the collision.
The man was charged with knowingly leaving a person in danger and violating road traffic safety rules by a person driving a vehicle while intoxicated, which resulted in the death of a minor (Part 1 of Article 135, Part 3 of Article 286-1 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine). In addition to 10 years’ imprisonment, he has been banned from driving for 10 years. Until the verdict becomes final, the convicted man will remain in custody, and the judgment will take legal effect after the expiry of the time limit for lodging an appeal.
