
In Drohobych, police have detained a 32-year-old local resident suspected of damaging the memorial “To the Victims of the German Occupation of 1941–1944” on Koval’ska Street. This was reported by the Drohobych District Police Department.
On 27 June, while monitoring social media, law enforcement officers discovered a video recording showing an unidentified man on Koval’ska Street in Drohobych desecrating, by damaging it, a monument of historical significance for Ukraine – the “Memorial to the Victims of the German Occupation of 1941–1944”. The memorial stands on the site where members of the Ukrainian national liberation movement and civilians from the city were executed by the Nazis.
An investigative team, officers from the criminal police and the response unit of the patrol police of the Drohobych District Police Department were dispatched to the scene. In the course of operational and investigative measures, law enforcement officers identified the man and detained him under the provisions of Article 208 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine.
According to preliminary information, the offence was committed out of hooligan motives, and the detainee was under the influence of alcohol. A decision is currently being made on whether to notify him of suspicion and to choose a preventive measure.
The pre-trial investigation is ongoing and is being conducted by the Drohobych District Police Department.
