A 27-year-old woman from Kryvyi Rih, temporarily residing in Lviv, has been arrested on suspicion of illegal possession of the narcotic substance kratom. According to the investigation, she ordered the substance online but was apprehended by law enforcement after receiving the parcels by post before she could use it.
During the search, two bags of green powder were found in her possession. An examination revealed that they contained nearly 100 g of kratom. Under the procedural guidance of the Frankivsk District Prosecutor’s Office in Lviv, the woman has been charged with illegal acquisition and possession of narcotic substances without the intent to distribute, in particularly large quantities.
“Although kratom is often marketed as a ‘natural tea’ or a safe coffee substitute, it contains substances that act on the brain’s opioid receptors, causing rapid addiction and dangerous side effects for the heart and psyche. Thus, behind the deceptive ‘naturalness’ lies a destructive dependency. Due to the high risk of overdose, the onset of psychosis, and severe withdrawal syndrome, this substance is banned not only in Ukraine but also in many countries worldwide,” stated prosecutor Iryna Loboda in the case.
Investigative actions are ongoing, with efforts to identify the seller and others involved in the illegal activity. The pre-trial investigation is being conducted by Police Department No. 1 of the Lviv District Police Department No. 2 of the Main Directorate of the National Police in the Lviv region.
