
Over the past week, numerous events have taken place in Lviv region in the humanitarian, economic, educational and defence spheres. The region has hosted children from front-line areas for a holiday, raised substantial sums to support the military, continued its participation in state programmes for business and is introducing modern management approaches.
The second group of participants in the “Carpathian Shift” project has arrived in Lviv region – 200 children from Sumy and Kharkiv regions. These are children of service personnel currently defending Ukraine, as well as children of fallen soldiers. A mountain holiday and a full programme of activities and leisure were organised for them. As part of the camp, large-scale multi-sport competitions were held, with winners and medallists being awarded, among others, by the leadership of Lviv region and the Kharkiv Regional Military Administration.
Lviv region continues to actively support the Defence Forces. Communities across the region are collecting aid for the military, and a charity auction under the “Birds of Victory” project managed to raise 4 million hryvnias. The Kulykiv, Zhovkva, Dobrosyn-Maheriv and Rava-Ruska territorial communities, as well as the Lviv District State Administration, were involved in organising and holding the auction. Separately, a charity “Evening of the Heroes of Mariupol” took place in Lviv, bringing together more than 50 defenders of Mariupol and Azovstal, service personnel, veterans, and families of prisoners of war and the fallen. During the event, 1.8 million hryvnias were raised, which will be directed towards drones for combat units of the State Border Guard Service.
From Stryi district, two defenders – Mykhailo Vasylyv and Mykola Kainskyi – were posthumously awarded high state honours. Lviv region is also continuing systematic work to support internally displaced persons and veterans. The region hosted a meeting of the cross-party parliamentary association “Protection of the rights of IDPs and other victims of Russian aggression”, which stressed the need for a comprehensive approach to resolving social issues related to these categories of citizens.
Under the “Own Business” programme, Lviv region has once again demonstrated one of the best results in the country. A further 65 entrepreneurs will receive microgrants to develop their own businesses. Among the winners of the ninth wave are young entrepreneurs, veterans, and representatives of the creative industries and the education sector. The total volume of state support amounts to 19.7 million hryvnias, and the region plans to create a further 104 new jobs. In addition, a Norwegian-Ukrainian business forum was held in Lviv with the participation of more than 200 business representatives, investors, company executives and government officials from both countries.
Important changes are also taking place in the management system. The Lviv Regional State Administration has begun introducing the OKR (Objectives and Key Results) system as a new approach to planning and assessing the performance of its departments. A strategic session has already been held for the first seven structural units with the participation of Oleksandr Novikov, adviser to the Minister of Defence of Ukraine.
The development of local self-government is also under discussion in Lviv region. In the format of a “Strasbourg meeting”, a discussion was held on the role of district councils in the system of territorial governance under martial law and in the context of future post-war recovery. Separately, work is under way in the region on interagency pathways to support children and adolescents with disorders related to the use of psychoactive substances: the first meeting provided participants with clear interaction algorithms and better tools for working with such children.
A Supported Living House for people with disabilities has opened in Lviv. This new social space enables adults with disabilities to live as independently as possible while receiving the necessary professional support. The region also joined in marking Father’s Day: more than ten interactive themed locations were organised for children and adults on the grounds of the Palace of Arts.
The education and science sectors were also rich in events. At Danylo Halytskyi Lviv National Medical University, an inaugural meeting was held on the establishment of the “BioMedTech” science park, which is intended to bring together science, medicine and business to develop innovative solutions. More than 560 graduates of this university are beginning their professional careers in medicine: 373 in “Medicine”, 115 in “Dentistry”, and 23 in “Paediatrics”.
At the Institute of Cell Biology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, a new director was elected – Kostyantyn Dmytruk, who has worked in science for 28 years. The region also selected the winners of the competition for regional grants for staff of scientific institutions and higher education establishments in Lviv region for 2026 – the authors of 13 research projects will receive support.
Lviv region is also continuing to develop sport. The region hosted the summer Ukrainian Cadet Swimming Championships, where 316 young athletes from 20 regions of Ukraine and Kyiv competed for medals. Such competitions give young swimmers the opportunity to showcase their abilities and gain experience at national level.
