For reference:

On the night of April 26, two powerful explosions occurred at the fourth power unit of the Chornobyl NPP. As a result, more than 60 tons of radioactive materials rose into the air. More than 100,000 people were evacuated from the territory within a radius of 30 kilometers from the accident site.

The accident was recognized as a man-made, ecological and humanitarian disaster. The main part of the work to eliminate the consequences of the accident was carried out in 1986-1987. About 240,000 people took part in them. The total number of liquidators for all years was approximately 600,000 people. Immediately after the disaster, 31 people died.

To prevent further releases of radioactive materials, by the end of 1986, the fourth reactor of the NPP was covered with a special “sarcophagus”, which was built by hundreds of thousands of volunteers and mobilized soldiers, and the Chernobyl NPP was put into operation again.
