This course will be available to masters of the faculties of journalism, business management and finance.
The Ivan Franko National University of Lviv has introduced a new modular course in Data Journalism. This course will be available to master’s students of the faculties of journalism, business management and finance. It aims to train a new generation of journalists and public servants capable of working with open data.
The course was developed with the support of the Ministry of Digital Transformation of Ukraine, the DTA project “Support to Digital Transformation of Ukraine” and the BRDO’s Better Regulation Delivery Office. It is designed to teach students how to analyse and use data to create high-quality media materials that meet the modern needs of society.
This step was a response to the growing need for professionals who can work with data. Today, data journalism is not yet a widespread practice in Ukraine, on the one hand because of a lack of access to high-quality open data, and on the other hand because of a lack of skills in data analysis to better inform the public.
During the course, students will learn how to analyse, visualise and use data to create media stories. Graduates of the course will be able to conduct in-depth journalistic investigations and identify social trends.
This educational initiative not only raises the professional level of journalists, but also contributes to the development of open data in Ukraine. The ability to work with data is key in today’s world, where information becomes the basis for decision-making at all levels – from the media to the government.
It is worth noting that high-quality investigative journalism will help fight corruption and increase transparency in the public sector. Such education is becoming an important tool for future journalists in building a more transparent and accountable society.
“The launch of the Data Journalism course at leading Ukrainian universities, including Ivan Franko National University of Lviv, is an important step towards training a new generation of professionals capable of working with large amounts of open data. This initiative not only introduces global practices into Ukrainian education, but also creates a solid foundation for fighting corruption through transparency and accountability. Teaching students how to analyse and visualise data opens up new career opportunities in data journalism and contributes to the development of a society built on open information. This is another step towards building an ecosystem of a transparent region in our Lviv Oblast,” said Maksym Stoliarchuk, Head of Digital Development at Lviv Regional State Administration.
The course was developed with the support of the Ministry of Digital Transformation of Ukraine with the assistance of the Digital Transformation Support Project, funded by USAID and UK Dev. The BRDO is a partner in the project.
