August 14 – Western Bug Day. River in numbers

Near the village of Verhobuzh, Zolochiv district, Lviv region, at an altitude of 320 m above sea level, one of the most beautiful rivers of Ukraine originates – the Western Bug

Today, August 14, we celebrate the Day of the Western Bug and once again wonder how one ordinary river could absorb so many interesting and unique facts.

The name of the river comes from the name of the East Slavic tribe “Buzhany”, which lived on the territory of Western Ukrainian lands during the VIII-XI centuries. And in the very root of the word lies the meaning “to bend, to twist”, which is not surprising, considering the peculiarities of the hydrolandscape of this river.

The Western Bug is a transboundary river. Almost along its entire length, it divides the borders of three states – Ukraine, Poland and Belarus.

It begins as a full-flow stream, and is one of the few Ukrainian rivers that does not flow into the Black Sea, but into the Baltic Sea.

And the largest water user in the basin is the city of Lviv. A few more interesting figures about water use in the Western Bug River basin in the infographic.

We congratulate the water and ecological community of Ukraine on the Day of the Western Bug. We urge everyone to take care of the cleanliness of the river and protect it. After all, we all work together for a common result – the preservation of pristine, unique nature for future generations.
