The redevelopment project near Lviv Airport has sparked heated discussions in the city. Andriy Sadovyi, the Mayor of Lviv, considers the decision to construct high-rise buildings next to King Danylo Airport a crime against the community of Lviv. He emphasises that such plans threaten the future of the airfield.
In his address, Sadovyi highlighted that he had appealed to the President, Prime Minister, the National Security and Defence Council, and other government bodies, yet had not succeeded. He stressed that the use of this land was planned for the development of the airport since Soviet times, and now, in wartime conditions, the community will not tolerate such plans.
The Deputy Mayor for Urban Planning, Lyubomyr Zubach, called the memorandum on construction a facade for implementing large-scale housing projects in Sokilnyky. He noted that despite promises, no extension of the runway is envisaged. Developers have only agreed to move part of the construction back to make space for a cargo terminal.
Zubach also emphasised that the master plan for Sokilnyky remains unchanged with regard to construction, and the project is supported by the regional authorities. He expressed surprise, as the village previously advocated for maintaining its rural appearance, yet now the project has the support of the regional government.
Lviv proposes to create an economic zone near the airport, which could provide up to 10,000 jobs. This would ensure the region’s development without harming the airport’s strategic areas.
