Doctors at St. Nicholas Children’s Hospital performed a successful operation to save the life of a toddler from Stryi.
One-and-a-half-year-old Demianchyk Shorobura suffered deep burns to his head, torso and arm after an accident at home. The boy knocked over a cup of hot broth while his mother was preparing dinner. Thanks to the quick reaction of the parents and the professional help of doctors, life-threatening complications were avoided.
Serious condition and quick surgery
The boy was rushed to St. Nicholas Children’s Hospital in Lviv, where doctors diagnosed both superficial and deep burns. “The top layer of the skin was so damaged that the tissue had died off,” explains burn surgeon Lesya Strilka. The dead tissue could have caused a serious bacterial infection, and if the infection spread, it could have led to sepsis.
The surgeons immediately performed the operation. They removed the damaged tissue and applied a special absorbent coating to help contain the spread of infection and speed up healing. All affected areas were fixed with bandages. The operation lasted only an hour and was successful. A short time later, Demianchyk went home.
The importance of prevention and initiatives
The doctors stressed that this case is another confirmation of the need to improve care for burn patients. Thanks to the Burn Care Alliance initiative, supported by the Taiwanese government, Ukrainian hospitals receive the best treatment practices and modern tools to help victims.
