At the Mother and Child Clinic of the University Hospital in Lviv, doctors carried out an emergency operation and saved the life of a 38-year-old patient and her prematurely born daughter. The woman had a premature detachment of more than 50% of the placenta and massive bleeding at 32 weeks of pregnancy.
Patient Olena Aranska, an internally displaced person from Kostiantynivka in Donetsk region, was brought to the hospital with severe uterine bleeding. She had already lost about 450 ml of blood at home, and during the examination in the admissions department the blood loss increased by approximately another 250 ml. The examination confirmed one of the most dangerous pregnancy complications — premature detachment of more than half of the placenta.
According to Professor, obstetrician-gynaecologist Halyna Semenyna, the patient was examined immediately, a case conference was held and she was urgently taken to the operating theatre, as every minute counted. Professor Oleksandr Paienok noted that rapid diagnosis, well-coordinated teamwork and an emergency caesarean section made it possible to save the lives of both mother and baby.
During the operation, a girl named Milana was born, weighing 1,800 grams. Due to prematurity and immature lungs, the newborn received intensive therapy: exogenous surfactant was administered, respiratory support was provided and comprehensive treatment was given. Neonatologist Dr Viktoriia Bidiuk said that the baby’s condition was stabilised within the first week, after which Milana stayed with her mother until they were discharged.
By the time of discharge, the girl weighed 2,615 grams, was breathing independently and gaining weight well. Despite the critical condition and significant blood loss, the doctors not only saved the lives of the mother and child, but also preserved the woman’s uterus and reproductive function. Professor Oleksandr Paienok stressed that this was possible thanks to timely surgical intervention and the teamwork of the specialists.
Olena and her daughter Milana are now at home. The mother publicly thanked the entire medical team for their professionalism and care, thanks to which she was able to return home with her baby.
