In Lviv, the traditional autumn day “Bike to work” is taking place

Today in Lviv is the autumn day “Bike to work”

Today, September 19, as part of the European Mobility Week, the traditional autumn day “Bike to work” is being held in Lviv. The campaign started in the morning with a bicycle breakfast on the square near the monument to King Danylo Halytskyi. Here bikers were treated to coffee and healthy goodies. After that, the participants left for their offices.

As Orest Oleskiv, head of the transport department of the LMR, said, “Bike to work” day has been held in Lviv for the eighth time. The goal remains the same – to popularize the bicycle as a mode of transport and encourage residents to ride two-wheelers to work, study or other activities.

“In this format, we are meeting in Lviv for the eighth time. But this year we have a new location – the square near the monument to King Danilov Halytskyi. After all, certain changes have recently taken place here, which made it more accessible to different categories of people, including cyclists. Actually, we wanted to emphasize this and distinguish it as a new location in the city center where you can gather and communicate.

Today’s action is another reason for residents to try riding a bicycle to work: think over the route, overcome certain mental obstacles and get on the rover,” explains Orest Oleskiv.

The official added that he himself actively uses a bicycle: “For me, a bicycle is the fastest way to get to work. If I have to drive 25-30 minutes by car, I cover this distance in 15 minutes by bicycle.”

According to Maria Kosiv, one of the participants of the bicycle breakfast, she has been cycling to work in the warm season and in favorable weather for the second year. He says that it is – more comfortable and faster. “Actually, this way of moving is convenient, and it also lifts the mood before work. After a bike ride, there is a lot of energy and inspiration to work. And I would very much like to see cycling in Lviv develop, including the corresponding infrastructure. To ride a bicycle was comfortable and safe,” said Maria Kosiv.

Orest Oleskiv notes that the city’s bicycle infrastructure is planned to be developed in the future. “Despite what has already been done, we plan to lay new paths and lanes for cyclists in order, first of all, to connect all sections of the bicycle network within the city. This is our goal for next year. And the impetus for this should be the approval of the city’s bicycle concept,” the official said.

In addition, the first bicycle path in the city was built in 2011. As of now, the length of Lviv’s bicycle network is more than 130 km. And by 2033, they want to equip at least 150 km of paths and lanes for cyclists in the Lviv community.

By the way, the “Bike to work” campaign in Lviv was supported by the Black Honey coffee shop, located on the street Halytskyi, 20, and the !Fest Food Mission company. Yes, today during the day all bikers will be able to get a 20% discount on food and drinks at the specified cafe. To do this, you should announce the promotional code “bicycle to work” at the cash desk and show your bicycle through the window. And the !Fest Food Mission company treated the participants of the cycling breakfast with healthy goodies.

We will remind you that the European Mobility Week started in Lviv at the end of last week and will continue for another 4 days, until September 22. The program includes a number of interesting events that popularize the use of public transport and alternative methods of moving around the city. Among the still relevant events are the lecture “Lifehacks of cyclists”, a walking tour from the tram depot to the modern transport hub and a tour on a trolleybus with an autonomous power system.

The event is implemented by the Lviv City Council. It takes place within the framework of the project “Integrated development of cities in Ukraine II”, which is carried out by the German government company Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH with the financial support of the governments of Germany and Switzerland.
