Stories from the frontline: how a pilot from Bakhmut hunts for enemies in Donetsk region

A serviceman with the call sign “Depp” is a drone operator of an air assault battalion.

The pilot of the 80th separate air assault brigade is reconnoitering the enemy’s positions near Mariinka, Donetsk region. At night, he destroys the enemy by dropping grenades from drones.

The man is 31 years old. In civilian life, he was a medical products warehouse manager. He had lived in Bakhmut all his life before joining the service. During the first six months of the Russian offensive, he did not leave. He had to leave his town when it was levelled to the ground.

A year ago, Depp received a call-up, went to the military enlistment office and started taking revenge on his enemies.

“The occupiers try to sneak in at night in small groups of 2-3 people. We cope and kill them. We have work all the time. Wedding drones are a very effective weapon, as it turned out. Night drops are gaining momentum. When you find a group of enemies approaching and you realise that your brothers are sitting in positions there, you want to do your job as well as possible to make ours as safe as possible. You want to do it,” the soldier said.
