In Lviv, doctors use the latest technology to work with war-wounded patients. Photo

A patient with an extremely serious injury came to one of the medical institutions in Lviv – a shell exploded near the man. To cure him, doctors used an augmented reality device, of which there are only four in Ukraine.

As the nature of the patient’s injuries is unusual for civilian medicine, in order to provide the best possible care, doctors decided to involve colleagues from other clinics and even countries that have extensive experience in treating similar injuries. However, they did it in a unique way – thanks to the augmented reality device of the American company RealWear, which has just appeared in Ukraine.

“The patient came to us a week ago from the capital with a severe mine injury. His arms, shins, etc. were damaged by shrapnel. Our doctors operated on the man twice. Fortunately, we are now seeing a positive trend in rehabilitation, ie the general condition is stabilizing, “said anesthesiologist Lesia Peleshchak.

The device itself, equipped with a powerful camera with zoom function, two microphones, it is attached to the doctor’s head. The device connects to the Internet and is controlled by voice. You can involve a person anywhere in the world in a real-time consultation. The only condition is the availability of the Internet.

“It’s a unique thing that allows us to connect in real time with colleagues from around the world who can help us. Thanks to the device, they see the same thing we do, even in a close-up format. At the same time, we can receive recommendations at the time of surgery, which tactics to choose. The new technology has already been developed in the Scandinavian countries, but this is the first time in Ukraine that such a device has been used. There is one such device in Lviv, and three more in Kyiv, ”said Andriy Bazylevych, a professor at Lviv National Medical University.

He assured that the augmented reality device is indispensable when working with patients who have received military injuries.

The augmented reality device is the first generation device (HMT-1) of the American company RealWear, which has passed all tests and tested over the past 6 years in Europe and the United States.
