Due to the public indictment of the prosecutors of the Lviv Regional Prosecutor’s Office, the verdict of the court of first instance for a 37-year-old local resident, convicted of theft (Part 4, Article 185 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine) was annulled on appeal. By the judgment of the district court, he was sentenced to 5 years in prison and released from serving the sentence with a probationary period.
It was established that during July-August 2022, the convict engaged in pickpocketing. The man stole mobile phones and money from the victims. In particular, these were ordinary people he met on the streets of Lviv.
In general, the defendant took possession of the property of the victims in the total amount of almost UAH 200,000.
It should be noted that the man was previously convicted of crimes against property. However, he did not get on the path of correction.
Disagreeing with this decision, the prosecutors, considering the sentence too lenient, challenged it in an appeal.
The Lviv Court of Appeal agreed with the prosecutor’s arguments and passed a new verdict. According to the latter, the convict was sentenced to 5 years of imprisonment.
