Last year, the police recorded a significant number of road traffic accidents (RTA) involving pedestrians as a result of not following traffic rules. The main portion of the injured were younger individuals. Specifically, 114 victims were in the age range of 10-19 years. There were also a serious number of incidents among people in middle and older age groups: 93 victims belong to the 40-49 years group and 89 to the 60-69 years category.
The vast majority of accidents involving pedestrians were caused by traffic rule violations by drivers. The statistics indicate the following:
- 34% of RTAs occurred due to the driver’s lack of attention to pedestrians at crosswalks (sections 18.1 and 18.2 of the Traffic Regulations);
- 13% of incidents were preceded by pedestrians suddenly crossing the road (sections 4.14 a, b);
- 15% of accidents were related to pedestrians crossing the road at unmarked locations (sections 4.14 g, ĝ, d., section 4.7);
- 18% of situations were caused by adverse conditions for safe speed (section 12.1);
- 5% of incidents were due to not maintaining a safe interval (section 13.1);
- 3% of RTAs were provoked by improper maneuvers at intersections (sections 16.1.,16.2.,8.7.3.e).
Undoubtedly, advancing safety on the roads is the responsibility of every participant in road traffic.
