Under the procedural supervision of the Lviv Regional Prosecutor’s Office, two employees of penal colonies were served a notice of suspicion. They are charged with extortion and receiving an unlawful benefit (Part 3 of Art. 368 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).
According to the investigation, the assistant head of one of the colonies in Rivne region demanded and received an unlawful benefit of UAH 174 thousand for the unrecorded sale of metal products.
In particular, for this money, the man promised to sell 30 stoves made by the colony’s convicts without appropriate contracts and official payment.
In addition, according to a similar scheme, the second suspect, the acting head of the production workshop of the Ivano-Frankivsk region correctional facility, demanded and received an undue benefit for the sale of wood products. In particular, in exchange for a bribe, the man promised to organize the production and delivery of 50 sets of backgammon without official payment.
The cost of this service was UAH 160 thousand.
The men were detained in accordance with Art. 208 of the CPC of Ukraine after receiving the money.
The investigation is ongoing.
Currently, the detainees are in custody and, at the request of the prosecutor, have been suspended from their positions.
The pre-trial investigation is being conducted by investigators of the State Bureau of Investigations located in Lviv, with operational support provided by the SBU Department of National Statehood Protection.
Note: In accordance with Article 62 of the Constitution of Ukraine, a person is presumed innocent of committing a crime and shall not be subjected to criminal punishment until his or her guilt is proved in accordance with the law and established by a court verdict of guilty.
